How to Create a Closet That Feels Chic and Boutique

Are you tired of jam packed clothes?

Are your hangers sticking out in every direction?

Are you ready to set aside time to tackle that closet?

If you’re reading this, chances are you're motivated to start spring cleaning. We're so proud of you!

As professional home organizers, we know a thing or two about tidying up.  We have seen all kinds of closets from the awkward to the magnificent.  A clean, organized closet is simply the best, and we're here to help you commence your closet journey.

STEP 1: REMOVE EVERYTHING FROM YOUR CLOSET

A blank slate will make the organization process easier.  Use this as an opportunity to give everything a good scrub.  Wipe down every surface and sweep and vacuum the floor.

Once your closet is empty, make note of what is working for you and does not work for you.  Just because you have always kept sweaters in one spot doesn’t mean you should continue keeping sweaters there.  Small changes make a big difference.

STEP 2: SORT, SORT AND MORE SORT

Sort your belongings into piles: keep, donate and throw away. If you have not worn an article of clothing in ages or would not buy it now, it is probably time to discard.  If the garment doesn't pass the Marie Kondo joy test, let it go.

STEP 3: CREATE A SYSTEM

Once you have a firm keep pile, find a cohesive system that you think you can keep long-term.   Hang (or fold) like items with likes – pants with pants, short sleeve tops with other short sleeve tops and so on.  Within each category, group items by rainbow color sequence: ROYGBIV.   We put white and pink garments before red and brown, and grey and black after violet.

For small closets, consider moving seasonal clothing to another location. This could be another closet, a hanging rack or storage bin underneath your bed.  Big heavy down jackets should not take up prime real estate when worn only a few weeks of the year.

STEP 4: DON’T FORGET TO MAKE IT STYLISH

When it comes to a stylish closet, uniformity is key.  Matching wicker baskets with labels are a great way to store your miscellaneous items.  Similarly, matching hangers are the simplest way to streamline your space.  Non-slip velvet hangers take up little space and are chic and affordable.

Finally, shoe racks are invaluable for those with a sizable shoe collection.  The grid-style shelves leave a small footprint (see what I did there?) and get your shoes off the floor.  Store boots and taller shoes on the open top shelf, slip running shoes into the middle sections and tuck your summer sandals underneath.
